Thank you for your willingness to serve your parish community as a Lector. This is one of the most important lay ministries at St. Vincent de Paul. You will literally bring the Word of God, Christ Jesus, to your brothers and sisters during our celebration of the Eucharist.
It is my hope that along with your fellow parishioners you will grow closer to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit through your study and immersion into Sacred Scripture. Remember, you are not a “reader” at Mass, you are a Lector – one who proclaims the Word of God. As you engage Scripture in a more profound manner, the manner necessary for this ministry, you will begin to see the distinction between “reading” and proclaiming.
In the Rite for Ordination of Deacons, when the Book of the Gospels is handed to the newly ordained deacon, the bishop exhorts him to “Receive the Gospel of Christ, whose herald you have become. Believe what you read, teach what you believe, and practice what you preach.” Though your ministry is different than that of a deacon, similar Words can be said: Believe what you read, proclaim what you believe, and practice what you proclaim.
The following handbook provides a theological perspective necessary for this ministry as well as practical guidelines and tips for serving as a Lector at St. Vincent de Paul. It is lengthy but please take the time to read it in its entirety and pay particular attention to those sections which are highlighted. If you have already been serving as a Lector, please take this opportunity to refresh your understanding of this ministry and commit once again to proclaiming the Good News to all the nations.
Please know that I hold you in my prayers as you embark on this ministry and I am always available should you have any questions.
